Aloha

A little bit about me

Born in Newport Beach, CA Derrick has been involved in Horticulture since a very young age, and he has embraced the golf course industry ever since. His interest in Horticulture began when he was growing up on his parent’s farm in Colorado. The farm included multiple acres of land, barns, horses, and many other farm animals. Every morning, Derrick and his sister were involved in the daily chores of pushing mowing the lawn and collecting vegetables amongst other things that the farm needed. The seasons in Colorado were short, so prepping the soil required an intensive amount of labor and planning. Derricks proudest moment was when he was able to design a new striping pattern on the front lawn.

At the age of 12, he was completely armed with knowledge and he had a really clear picture on how to run a family farm. His early exposure to the farm and its responsibilities spiked his curiosity and love for the land, and for that, he feels extremely blessed. At the age of 23, he began working multiple jobs to pay for college. Just after graduation, Derricks determination for golf led him to the tropical islands of Hawaii. After graduating college in 2004 he received his first assistant position on the Big Island. “All of my friends could not believe that I was moving to Hawaii” he recalls. “I was already thinking about the ocean when there were three feet of snow in the yard”. Derrick spent 4 years as an Assistant Superintendent for both Waikoloa Kings Course and Hualalai Resort where he was involved in the MasterCard Championship.

Carreer Advancements

Derrick advanced his career when he took the Superintended position at Kapalua Resort. The greens were not spectacular, so lots of work needed to be done. The course underwent a multi-million dollar renovation and he was able to grow in the greens with TifEagle Bermuda Grass. The renovation included twenty-one new greens including an 8,000 sq ft short game practice area, new bunkers, and irrigation. The course open to rave reviews and everyone said that the course has never looked better in years. On the fall of 2008, Derrick hosted the 2008 Kapalua LPGA Classic. The tournament was a great success and all of the players were extremely pleased with the course conditions. Derrick was part of the management team for the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua Resort (2011), SBS Championship on the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort (2010) and, Mercedes Benz Championship on the Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort (2008 – 2009).

In 2011, Derrick accepted the position of Director of Agronomy for the Prince Golf Course where he oversaw the complete renovation of the greens. He brings over 15 years of golf course maintenance experience in both cold and warm weather climates.  Derrick is also incorporating a strong emphasis on building a team atmosphere to improve fellow staff and company operations. He dedicates all of his skills and knowledge to enhance The Prince Course and provides excellent Agronomic conditions on a daily basis. Derrick will lead the Prince Golf Course by maintaining its rich history and excellent playing conditions by exhibiting Aloha, dignity, and respect to all.
